Making The Best Of Your Situation

Last weekend I particpated in another craft show at a church.  This is a big event and known through out our town.  We weren't sure where we would be placed but wanted the first floor.  We were so blessed to get a big room and on the first floor.  Many people have a hard time getting up and down stairs so we wanted to have the first floor so we would be seen.  Thankfully we got our wishes.  The show was a good sucess with many compliments on our display.

We ended up in the library but it had a small ceiling so we could not use our trellis but could make use of the space to hang many aprons.

We were blessed!

Craft Show Tips

Today I was reading about how to have a better craft show and what are the basics. I've only done a couple so far but feel I've missed some important things to do and include in my show. So I feel maybe there are some others who need so help too. Below are some basic tips for better craft show presentations.

Participating in craft shows can be very exciting. Its a great way to meet new artists and expose your work to lots of people.

Here are the basics:
• Prop your items up with boxes, tables or stands, (boxes match table cover)..
• Include a DVD player or digital photo frame to show past work.
• Bring plenty of business cards.
• Have multiple price points.
• Price everything.
• Take credit cards!

What to Pack

  • Pens, markers
  • Paper (scrap and nice paper for signs)
  • Invoice book
  • Scissors
  • Labels and price tags
  • Tape (EVERY KIND YOU CAN THINK OF: double sided, duct, scotch, packaging. If they make it, bring it.)
  • Mini-first aid kit (band aids, pain relievers, eye drops, antacids, etc)
  • Tools (screwdriver, hammer, pliers, wire, zip ties, aka The Crafters Need to Have Supply!)
  • Weights and tarps for your tent (Tip: bring milk jugs and fill them with water to use as weights)
  • Apron or waist pouch for change
  • Plenty of change to put in your apron or waist pouch
  • wet wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Water and snacks

Fall Craft Show 2010

So here is my first offical craft show.  Business is slow at shows due to the enconomy these days but we still did good.  We will keep pressing on.  We've got great ideas for then next shows too.  We've got to make decoration and booth planning weeks in advance not at the last minute by staying up until 2 am trying to finish everything.

Lap blankets, neck scarves, spirit flags.

My daughter and granddaughter made hair barrettes for the show.

A Day for Women Seminar

I recently attended a seminar called A Day for Women. It was a great seminar for connecting and networking but not for sales. I still need to find the right shows to present my products in. I need more exposure but not sure where yet. I'm still looking and open for ideas. I could be in lots of shows but I don't want to waste time if it doesn't bring in sales. I'm open for suggestions.

Here is my booth, it was smaller than we expected. So next time need to know more information before attending.

Know Your Shows & Programs

Before you sign up for a booth, table, or display area find out what exactly you will be doing and what you are getting into. Don't go on preconceived ideas but find out all the facts.

As business women our time is very valuable, whether its a home business or store front business our time is valuable. You need to decide if the activity you are participating in is really worth the time and money spent to participate.

Take for instance a holiday show for business women or a business women's seminar with booths. Is this just a social group gathering or is it a sales meeting or a training seminar? Find out who will be in attendance at this function. Look at the time of day it is being hosted and where it is located, and read between the lines. If a show is scheduled during the day during normal business hours and open to they general public realize that the average person is working and that they will not be in attendance so don't count on many sales. Every person in attendance has their own agenda, promoting there own business. So take this in consideration if you want to spend the time to meet the other business women and network or if you really are interested in getting your products sold. If you want to get many sales than this is not the place for you.

A real craft show or even a women's show will be in the evening and or on the weekend when those who are attending are looking to buy and can actually come to buy. The middle of the week between 9-5 is just for those are wanting to connect and network.

I recently went to a business women's seminar thinking that I would get sales but in reality it was more a social group of networking women. There were good speakers but not about what I was interested in. Topics included priorities, getting the most our of your salon, getting physically fit, all of which I already knew about.

The things I was interested in are web marketing, planning and organizing your business, tax deductions, but these were not offered. I was naive to think that this seminar would be a great selling place but it was not.

I will keep looking into where to get the real help for my business. I am looking into my local technology center and my local university co-op too. And not all information is costly to attain, much information is free for the asking, or have a nominal fee. Oh, one more thing, don't join a group who promises to mentor you for a fee and also wants to tap into your knowledge without paying you for your information. Your information is valuable too, and if your not being paid maybe you should be. If you choose to give it away freely then you should be able to get it back freely too.

Holiday Extravaganza

Showing my wears at the Heart Link Network Holiday Extravaganza 2009. I had loads of fun meeting other business women at this Extravaganza. Many women in my hometown have there own businesses. Of the group of women there were only 2 other ladies who actually hand make the items they sell. One woman made beautiful silver jewelry and other made bibs, pillows and jewelry.

I'm sure there are others in my town who handmake items but they just weren't at this showing.
